SIKA bring new production capacities onstream in Myanmar

Date:

Recent Development:

Sika is now producing mortar goods at its factory in Yangon, the main city in Myanmar, in addition to concrete admixtures. The current location was enlarged to provide for increased production capacity and logistical developments. A quarter of Myanmar’s gross domestic product is produced in the Yangon metropolitan area, which is home to about eight million people.

The expansion of Sika goods produced locally is a crucial step in assisting Myanmar’s developing construction sector. This extension will result in reduced shipping distances in addition to increasing efficiency. This lowers expenses while simultaneously lowering CO2 emissions.

Mike Campion, Regional Manager Asia/Pacific of SIKA: “The consistent expansion of our supply chain in the emerging markets of Southeast Asia is part of Sika’s growth strategy. Adding mortar production to the Sika portfolio makes us the first – and so far, the only – international company to offer high-performance products and solutions locally in Myanmar. Together with our outstanding technical service, this expansion allows us to address the needs of our customers in Myanmar’s construction sector and support them optimally with their projects.”

SIKA – A Time-Tested Myanmar Partner

The building sector in Myanmar has long relied on Sika’s goods and services. For intricate, large-scale construction projects of national significance, high-quality specialty chemical compounds are required, such as concrete admixtures.

These include building a 1.9 km bridge across the Bago River and renovating the 620 km Yangon-Mandalay rail corridor, both of which aim to dramatically reduce traffic congestion connecting Yangon City and Thilawa, Myanmar’s largest port.

Construction Sector- The Driver of Growth

The COVID-related downturn in Myanmar’s construction sector is now stabilizing, and between 2023 and 2026, it is predicted to rise by more than 7% annually. The development of new manufacturing hubs, improved transport networks, and extensive plans for the construction of residential and public structures are some of the major factors influencing this rise. The remaining 40% of the 55 million people in the country without grid power are anticipated to be connected to the nationwide grid by 2030, and the nation will also significantly expand its drinking water delivery network, which is another sign of growing living standards.
